What to check on a E39
- Cooling system overhaul history — radiators, expansion tanks and water pumps are service items.
- VANOS condition on M52/M54/M62 engines; S62 M5 rod bearings and chain guides need records.
- Rear suspension bushings, thrust arms and shock mounts wear on every E39.
- Pixel loss on the instrument cluster and MID display is common — factor repair cost.
- Rust at the jacking points, trunk lid seams and around windshield trim on northern cars.
