What to check on a E46
- Rear subframe mounting points for cracks — a known E46 weak spot, especially on M3s.
- Cooling system refresh: expansion tank, water pump, thermostat and radiator age out together.
- VANOS seals and, on S54 M3s, documented rod bearing and valve-adjustment history.
- Rust in the rear wheel arches, front fenders and around the trunk seal.
- SMG-to-manual conversions on M3s — verify quality of parts and workmanship.
