How to Buy a BMW at an Online Auction
A step-by-step guide to bidding on a BMW online: research, reserve prices, bid timing, buyer fees and what happens after you win.
Do your research before you bid
Read the full listing, study every photo and watch any videos the seller has posted. Check the VIN and open the history report link when one is provided.
Use the comments section to ask the seller questions in public — their answers help every bidder, and a responsive seller is a good sign.
Understand reserve vs. no reserve
A reserve auction has a hidden minimum price. If bidding doesn't reach it, the car doesn't sell. A no-reserve auction sells to the highest bidder no matter the price.
Set your limit and account for fees
Decide your maximum before the final minutes. On Bimmer-Bids the buyer fee is 3% of the winning bid, with a $250 minimum and a $5,000 maximum — add it, plus shipping, to your budget.
Bids are binding. Before your first bid you'll accept the bidder agreement and verify a card.
Bid timing and anti-sniping
Late bids extend the auction clock, so there's no advantage to waiting for the last second. Bid what the car is worth to you.
After you win
Sign the purchase commitment and pay the buyer fee. The seller's contact details then unlock so you can arrange payment for the car and pickup or shipping directly.
